Irazu Volcano
There are many volcanos in CR. This one is about an hour outside of
San Jose. It grumbles and shakes and spits ash and stuff on occassion,
but the last time it really erupted was in late 60's when it went off several
times. Costa Rica has two uneven geological shelves under it that shift
and cause on average 30 earthquakes annually that are over 4.0 ricter.
So needless to say there are mainly one-story homes and buildings here.
This is typical view from Irazu cus it is about 12,000 ft high and the cloud
layer is almost always 8 to 10,000 ft. So it is clear here above the clouds.
As with all Latin America there is alot of poverty here. But a first impression
is how sincerely nice the people are. You see them always smiling, and waiving
to each other. And they like to talk with us tourists and are very helpful and
kind to us. Also they are very well-educated. 98% literacy rate -- higher than
the US -- education for every child is mandated in the constitution. And since
there is no military, the tax money goes more to education.
From a workplace perspective, the people are aslo great -- at our center
here the population is 60% young women between 24 and 28. And they dress
as if they are going out on friday nite -- low-rise jeans with bellies showing,
very tight fitting outfits and short skirts. Very pleasant.
Stopped at a garden and got to try out my macro capability on the Nikon
for the first time. They have over 1000 different species of orchids at this
one garden. They are real beautiful and a bit funky -- i guess that's to be
expected since the orchid is actually both sexes in one plant -- some look
like little animals.
